Ditch the Diet, Eat for Better Health (Eleanor’s Journey, Week 1)

Coach Ida, 03/09/2016

Eleanor is an old friend, and had been very resistant to the idea of going all in on a plant-based, whole food diet. However, her family has a history of cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease running rampant, and she doesn’t want that to be her health destiny.

She is ready to go 100% vegan and to engage in a daily exercise program.

There are so many great recipes to try that make this way of eating delicious, and you one can spend as much or as little time as you like to put together great family meals that are healthy and really taste good. We will share a new recipe each week that Eleanor is trying with her family, along with her reviews and ideas. She has agreed to share her weight loss and her final cholesterol reading at the end of her coaching program.

I am so excited for her and the wonderful changes that this way of eating will bring.

Here is Eleanor’s Story:

My name is Eleanor. I am 56 years old, and I have struggled with weight my entire adult life.

I was a chubby kid. There were years that I lost weight and kept in off for a while, but then I allowed my poor habits to creep back in, and the weight would creep back on.

I have always exercised, but as I got a bit older the exercise could not overcome my bad eating habits. I have tried Weight Watchers a number of times, juice fasting, water fasting, and Atkins without success. And after learning about plant-based, whole food eating, addictive foods, and the teachings of Dr. Fuhrman, I now understand why those point-based programs, high protein diets, and calorie counting didn’t work for me or most of my friends.

A calorie is not just a calorie. Micronutrients are really, really important, and you don’t get enough of them in a standard American diet.

At 230 lbs, I have very high total cholesterol (close to 300) and need to lose anywhere from 90-100 lbs. I honestly don’t know how I’ve managed to avoid developing diabetes or high blood pressure at this point. That being said, I don’t want to become diabetic or have to worry about high blood pressure. So I needed to make a change.

I have decided to change my life by changing my food.

I went to one of Dr. Fuhrman’s health getaways, and I lost weight for the first time without feeling hungry. I also had loads of energy, and it helped my moods too.

I felt kind of light and happy.

I came home and tried to follow the program on my own, but it wasn’t long before I fell into old family habits of snacking, eating out unhealthfully, etc. I realized that I needed more help and accountability… so I called Ida.

Ida has been so supportive in helping me recognize my addiction to unhealthy habits, and she is helping me plan my meals and exercise routines.

So, when she asked if I would be willing to share my health journey with Healthy Food Now, I agreed because I feel sure now that this will work for me.

I want to show anyone out there who feels out of options that plant-based, whole food eating can work.
