Celebrate Your Inner Chef!

Kate Glover, 07/25/2016

Today is National Culinarians Day! That’s right, this whole day is dedicated to honoring the chefs and cooks who prepare our favorite mouth-watering dishes.

You might be thinking since I started eating healthier, I try to make more of my own meals and I don’t really have a favorite chef...

You make your own meals? Power to you! Why not celebrate yourself?

One of the perks of maintaining a healthy diet is that often, you become your own culinary genius. When you eat out frequently, it can be difficult to keep track of what’s actually in your meal -- the oils, excess salt, heavy creams, and other high-calorie, low-nutrient ingredients added to recipes won’t do your health any favors. Being your own chef allows you to know exactly what you’re eating, and it makes it easier to stick with your healthy goals.

And besides, making your own food is fun!

You could go a step beyond cooking and even grow your own herbs and produce. Not only is gardening a fun hobby, but the food you grow will also help you cut down the cost of grocery shopping. Basil, oregano, sage, thyme, mint, cucumbers, carrots, corn, squash, brussels sprouts, onions, tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, lettuce, spinach, kale… the list could go on. Fill your garden with your favorite vegetables and fruits so you can cook with the freshest ingredients!

Whoever says that people on a healthy diet are giving up “real” food in favor of the bland and flavorless don’t know what they’re missing. There are so many delicious meals you can make with whole food, plant-based ingredients. If you’re looking for new healthy recipes, check out some of our favorites: brussels sprouts, baked sweet potatoes, mashed cauliflower, marinated kale, red pepper hummus,  black bean and mushroom burger, roasted red pepper and tomato soup, black bean and yam quesadillas, zesty chicken with steamed kale.

Try making a healthy dish today and celebrate the wonderful chef you are!
