5 Ways a Health Coach Can Help Optimize Your Well-Being

Kayla Sheely , 08/04/2016

In order to achieve peak performance, professional athletes always enlist the help of a coach. At first, it might seem a little counterintuitive. Why do amazing athletes need a coach? After all, they are some of the best in the world, they know their sport inside and out, and they train every day. When you see a coach who’s overweight or has never played the actual sport professionally standing next to a pro football or basketball player, it can seem a little strange.

Professional athletes need coaches for many reasons, regardless of whether their coach was a “pro” or not.

And athletes aren’t the only ones who should be using coaches. In fact, anyone who wants to achieve peak performance should enlist the help of a coach. If you are looking to advance in your career, find a business coach. If you want some extra spice in your love life, hire a dating coach. If you want to focus on your health or lose weight, partner with a health coach.

Here are 5 ways working with a health coach can optimize your health (or fitness!):

1. Brings an outside perspective.

It can be hard to see your own weaknesses and slipups when you live with them every day. Your health coach won’t be biased or emotionally attached to your issues with food. She can bring a new, fresh perspective and will look at your health in ways you may not have thought of before.

2. Looks at the big picture.

When you are in a battle with that tempting piece of chocolate lava cake, it can be easy to lose sight of the big picture -- “it’s okay to cheat on my diet plan, because I really deserve this cake right now.” Your health coach can help you take a step back to look at your overall health, not just specific instances in your journey.

3. Provides fresh knowledge.

Your health coach is a health coach for a reason. She is passionate about nutrition and has taken the time to learn about how food works with the body. You’ll learn from her knowledge, and even if she can’t answer a question or two, she’ll find out for you.

4. Challenges you.

Sometimes, in order to get outside of our comfort zone, we need to be pushed. Your health coach will challenge you and help you set goals that maybe you wouldn’t have done on your own. She’ll encourage you to take bigger steps and to aim higher than you would have on your own.

5. Encourages and motivates.

How many times have you set a goal, only to abandon it a week later because you lost your motivation or it got too hard? Your health coach won’t let you off the hook that easy! She’ll be by your side to encourage you when you get discouraged or mess up, and she’ll motivate you when you forget why you decided to do this healthy eating thing in the first place.
