Cut the Sugary Drinks: Liven Up Your Water with This Trick

Kayla Sheely , 06/10/2016

It can be easy to overlook the role your drinks play in your weight loss efforts. Not only do sugary drinks like soda and many coffee beverages add extra calories to your diet, they also contain unhealthy additives. Our bodies have to work harder to function properly because they have to take care of extra toxins and foreign substances.

The obvious alternative to these sugary drinks is…water!

Water is vital for our bodies to function properly; it helps “lubricate the joints, protect the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, regulate body temperature and assist the passage of food through the intestines.”

However, we’ll admit, water can get a little boring some times. If you are looking for some variety, infusing your water with fruit can be a great way to add flavor without adding any unhealthy sugars.

Best of all, infusing your water is simple!

First, pick your favorite fruits and vegetables. We recommend strawberries, blueberries, lemons, limes, oranges, or cucumbers. You can also choose different herbs and spices like mint, rosemary, or lavender.

When you’ve picked your flavor combos (as simple or as complicated as you’d like!), add the fruits and herbs to your glass or pitcher. If you are using fruits with a thick skin like oranges or lemons, you may want to peel them first to avoid a bitter flavor.

You may want to gently stir the fruit and herbs to release the flavors before adding water.

Fill your glass with water and viola!

Here are some great combos to perk up your water routine:

Blueberry + Mint

Blueberry and mint make a great combination! The minty sweetness will curb your sugar cravings.

Strawberry + Lime

This combo tastes like summer! Tangy limes with sweet strawberries come together for a classic pairing.

Cucumber + Mint

Try a refreshing mix by adding cucumbers and mint to your water bottle!
