Spinach, kale, collard greens, watercress...whatever your preference, leafy greens are some of the healthiest, most nutritious foods out there. We’d all benefit from adding more to our diet! That being said, we know it can be difficult to fit greens into your daily diet. That’s why every Monday we’ll share one of our favorite green smoothie recipes with you.
Whether you’re a healthy eating pro and leafy greens are your favorite part of your diet, or you’re new to healthy eating and aren’t sure where to start, green smoothies are an easy way to increase your daily fruit and vegetable intake. Start your week off right by trying one of our recipes or creating your own!
This week’s smoothie is packed with heart-healthy berries and has a lovely raspberry flavor that masks the taste of the greens. Not only are raspberries delicious, but they are also rich in fiber and phytochemicals, low in calories, and they promote heart health. According to Dr. Fuhrman, M.D., they are “some of the highest antioxidant foods in existence” and have been linked to a decreased risk of hypertension and heart attack.
Raspberries aren’t the only heart-healthy ingredient in this recipe. Nuts, like the almonds in this smoothie, are beneficial for heart health. Nut consumption reduces the risk of coronary heart disease, and it also reduces cholesterol and inflammation. Filled with potassium, calcium, magnesium, selenium, and vitamin E, nuts are a wonderful addition to a healthy diet. They’re also a good addition to green smoothies, because nuts are satiating and will keep you full longer.
Here’s the recipe:
Serving Size: 2
Prep Time: 5 minutes
3 cups baby kale
1 cup frozen blueberries
2 cups raspberries
1/4 cup almonds
1 tbsp ground flax seed
1 cup water
Toss all of the ingredients into a high powered blender and enjoy!
